Prevent skin irritations before they happen...

It's that time of the year again!
Be ready this year to prevent skin irritations due to seasonal drying. Every year it happens. It gets cold, we turn on the heat. We also begin washing our hands in hot water. These things combined causes our skin to dry and crack. Approximately, 98% of the calls that we receive concerning dermatitis, occurs during the winter months. Most are caused by dry skin. Here are some suggestions to help minimize problems caused by dry hands. 1. Soap - Check to see if your hand soap contains alcohols or solvents. Both are typical and remove natural oils from your hands. Look for a soap that is detergent based. 2. Barrier Creams - Most barrier creams do a good job sealing and protecting the skin, but the problem is that you are sealing dry skin. 3. Moisturizers - Definitely a must during the winter months, especially for operators working in water based products like coolants and cleaners. 4. Educate your operators on proper hygiene. What I have found to work the best is a product that combines the barrier cream and moisturizer together. Silicone Glove moisturizes and seals your hands. I have recommended Silicone Glove from Avon for over 25 years and have had great success with this product in the machine shop environment. It is readily available, you may even have an Avon rep in your facility. For your convenience, we are stocking Silicone Glove in 1.5 oz. tubes this year. |
